Shopping for fabulous home
decor? Area Rugs-101
One
to two months labor is generally necessary to complete either process. Once an
order is complete, the area rugs are loaded into massive shipping containers and
make their way across the Atlantic to an American port. From there, the journey
through customs and to our warehouse ensues, making it’s final destination to
you! All in all, 3-4 months is the usual timeframe necessary to create hand made
rugs. We hope this crash course in “Rug Speak” helps you to make a more informed
decision, when choosing a new work of art for your floor.
Hand-knotting
involves actually tying the yarn into the template, incorporating specific knots
handed down for generations. Most hand-knotted area rugs are exquisitely
produced and have unmatched durability. Natural fringe on either end is commonly
found with these designs. Fine wool and silks are the most common yarn used for
hand-knotted styles.
Hand-cut
& loop or hand-hooking. One of the more involved processes, there are two
textures featured in this group. Manufacture type is identical to hand-tufting,
except that several areas of the rug are “looped”, in a Berber type fashion.
Generally, the pile height is lower than a hand-tufted rug, but not always. Rugs
that retain a pile of ½” or higher, with the exception of the hooked areas, have
stunning visual interest & incredible depth. Wool and modified acrylic are
generally used for this type of hand made rugs.
With
hand-tufting, these works of art are transferred to a template; an actual fabric
piece cut to size, with a pattern of the exact rug inked onto it. The desired
yarn is then inserted in strands with a Tufting Gun into its proper location,
depending on the color of the area to be woven. Once the strands are in place,
they are given a trim and a natural cotton fabric is then permanently adhered to
the back of the rug to prevent unraveling. The edges are surged to prevent
unraveling, (sometimes after the backing has been adhered, adding to the
integrity of the finish). A device similar to a small mower is then drawn over
the tufted rug several times, in a process called “Carding”. This creates a
flush, even pile height. Finally, detailed carving is incorporated into the
finished rug with special shears, to add dimension and texture. Modified
acrylic, acrylic and wool are used within this type of hand made rugs.
Hand
made rugs include hand-tufted, hand-knotting, hand-cut & loop, also known as
hand-hooked. It all begins with the design, supplied by world renowned artists,
arriving at the rug factory.
Machine
made rugs are also referred to as power loomed or machine-woven. Enormous looms
are threaded with thousands of continuous strands of selected yarns and actually
programmed by a computer to then weave the desired style, over & over. The edges
are surged (bound) on both sides to prevent unraveling. As the rug designs are
compiled, each single rug is cut, the ends surged, folded over & secured in
place by either more surging or an adhesive. (The automation of production
allows for a quicker shipping & delivery time to the United States, than their
hand-tufted counterparts.) Machine-made rugs do not have a fabric backing on
them and are easily identified by this feature. The machine weaving is extremely
accurate in regards to design consistency, tightness of the yarn & low pile
height. Reduced shedding and durability are also benefits found with area rugs
manufactured on looms of this nature. Nylon, Olefin, Advanced Heat-set
Polypropylene and some wools are commonly used in the machine made rugs.
